Drowning Prevention Week: Stay alert, stay safe — what you need to know

Spending time by the water — whether swimming, surfing, or simply enjoying the coast — can be one of life’s greatest joys. However, knowing how to stay safe and what to do in an emergency is crucial. The sea is powerful and unpredictable, changing in an instant. Today’s post explores the importance of water safety and provides critical steps to take in a coastal emergency.

Why is water safety so important?

The ocean, while beautiful, presents hidden risks:

  • Rip currents — fast-moving currents that can drag swimmers out to sea
  • Cold water shock — sudden immersion in cold water can cause panic and breathing difficulties
  • Tides and changing conditions — water levels and wave strength fluctuate, sometimes catching swimmers off guard

Recognising these risks and knowing how to respond can save lives, prevent accidents, and help everyone enjoy the water safely.

What to do in a coastal emergency

1. Spot the signs of danger

Before entering the water, assess the environment:

  • Check for rip currents fast-moving water that looks darker or choppier than surrounding areas
  • Be aware of tide times — don’t get caught by rising waters
  • If swimming on a beach, look for lifeguard flags and follow guidance

2. If you’re caught in a rip current

    • Don’t panic! Fight the urge to swim against it.
    • Float first — if you struggle, lie on your back and control your breathing.
    • Swim parallel to the shore until you escape the current, then return.
    • Signal for help if needed, wave one arm above your head.

    3. If someone else is in trouble

    • Call for help immediately — dial 999 or 112 and ask for the coastguard.
    • Never enter the water to attempt a rescue — you could be pulled in too.
    • Throw a flotation device (life ring, pullbuoy or ball) to help them stay afloat.

    Final remarks

Water safety is not just about caution – it’s about preparation. Whether swimming, paddling, or walking along the coast, knowing the risks and how to react in an emergency can make all the difference.

Stay safe, stay aware, and enjoy the water responsibly!
